History

English Toy Spaniels are companion dogs native to England and have long been the favorites of the English nobility.  The English Toy Spaniel is known in its native country as the King Charles Spaniel, and is considerably older than its better known sibling, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel; The Cavalier being a 20th Century recreation of an older style of English Toy Spaniel.  Each breed has four distinct coat varieties, which at one time were considered to be unique breeds.  The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the most popular breeds in England, and is rapidly growing in popularity in the United States as well.  It is not uncommon for fanciers to refer to a dog by its color variety instead of its breed name, so any dog referred to as a King Charles Spaniel, a Prince Charles Spaniel, a Blenheim Spaniel, or a Ruby Spaniel is actually an English Toy Spaniel or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.  Historically, the English Toy Spaniel was also known as the Comforter, Spaniel Gentle, and Spaniell Gentile.  Modern fanciers often distinguish the two breeds by referring to the English Toy Spaniel/King Charles Spaniel as the Charlie and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as the Cavalier, CKC, or Cav.    Please select the type that your are interested in learning more about from the section above.
